OUT at Cinema City

Hello all you gender-interested folk!
I thought you might want to know about the film XXY (dir. Lucia Puenzo, Argentina/France/Spain 2007), which will be shown at Cinema City on Sun 20 June at 5.15 pm. It is being introduced by UEA’s own Natasha Curson, and she says:
“This film looks at the experience of a teenager who is intersex – that is someone who has physical characteristics of both sexes. It’s the first film to tackle this seriously and sensitively and does so very well and without becoming an ‘issue’ movie, I think. Intersex is little understood in the community at large (less even than transgenderism I think, which is saying something) so the film offers an opportunity to know more about this subject.”
I think it would be a great opportunity to learn about intersex, so I hope you will come along to the showing, and then we can talk about it in our gender studies group after!
Best wishes,
BJ

OUT Write Night

The Norwich Pride Out Write Creative Writing Group and the Norwich Pride Out Write Poetry Group will combine forces at the Tea Lounge on Ber Street, Norwich on Monday 12 July from 7-9pm. The idea is to create a safe space where new writers and readers can share their work, and raise some funds towards an Out Write anthology. Suggested minimum donation £3 each, includes all the tea you can drink! Those who enjoy the experience might like to consider taking part in….

Proud Words Norwich Pride Poet Laureate, Vince Laws, will host Proud Words, an evening of spoken word at St Gregory’s Church, Pottergate, Norwich on Wednesday 28 July – just three days before the second ever Norwich LGBT Pride!

There will be brave new work from the Norwich Pride Out Write poets and creative writers, plus work from more established writers and performers, with all profit going towards an Out Write anthology to be printed later in the year.

The venue is fully accessible, doors open at 6pm, performances run from 7-9pm with a short interval, there’s a licensed bar, plus teas, coffees and delicious cakes.

Tickets cost £5/£3 concs and are available from Vince vincelaws@gmail.com, in person from St Gregory’s Church, via www.stgregorysart.co.uk or 07910 153299, or via the UEA Box Office at www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk or 01601 508050. If you can’t attend but can chip in a donation, it will be very gratefully received.

“My bike ride again will be gentle bike ride on Sat 5th June 2010. If your looking for race then this is not the bike ride for it! The plan is to meet at the WOW drop in in Norwich at 10 Cathedral St, Norwich. Jo Jo who runs the WOW drop in has kindly offered to secure our bikes whilst having a coffee/natter at the drop in at the rear of 10 Cathedral St. I will be arriving at the drop in (at start, from 1.30pm) and leaving at approx 2.30 p.m to cycle from the drop in along the river towards the start of the Marriotts Way. The bike ride is mainly all off road along a dis-used railway line, and will be a few miles each way there and back. However, if you would like to come along but not do as much as others, then it should be easy for you to cycle back independently, as I understand is just straight back along the same route. However please note – I have not done this ride in ages so there maybe changes to it that I am not aware of! Please bring a drink/refreshments as am not sure if there are pubs/cafes along the route. So far there are 5 of us going on this ride. Should be fun!”

Drag Kings in Norwich

Hi all,

Anyone out there interested in becoming a drag king? Perhaps you are already. Or, like me, you’re quite curious about the whole thing? Fancy getting together with myself and like-minded others to have some fun with it? If so, please email me and maybe we can get something together! ALL welcome!

Urban Dictionary definition of Drag King: “a woman who, generally for public entertainment, dons men’s clothes and adopts a stereotypically masculine demeanor while on stage. As with drag queens, a drag king’s performance can range from a silly, overdone parody to a more natural, subtle depiction of masculinity.”

You can also click here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_king/

Please email me directly, and feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested, thanks!
